Gymnema Sylvestre, an aid for Diabetes
Gymnema is a climbing plant native to India and tropical Africa. Among the inhabitants of Bombay there was the custom of chewing fresh leaves to reduce glycosuria: the belief in the effectiveness of this remedy was so ingrained that still today many diabetics cultivate the plant in their garden. In Hindu language it is called gurmar: eliminator of sugars.
Property of the Gymnema
The active principle of Gymnema is gymnemic acid which plays its role hypoglycemic action through the inhibition of intestinal absorption of sugar and stimulating a greater metabolic transformation of glucose at the cellular level.
several studies conducted in Japan have shown that Gymnema extracts contain molecules able to bind to intestinal receptors used for the absorption of sucrose, reversibly blocking them. This block is established quickly and lasts for many hours, preventing the absorption of sugar by 50%.
The intake of Gymnema restores the values of various substances to normal, which in case of hyperglycemia are increased. These substances (such as polysaccharides, hexosamines, glycosaminoclycans, hexuronic acid, etc.) are responsible for most of the harmful effects of diabetes and a sugar-based overeating with vascular, renal, neurological and ocular complications.
Effects on basal, post-prandial glycaemia and glycosuria
The normalizing effect given by Gymnema is linked to a greater bioavailability of insulin, which directs glucose into the correct metabolic path, consuming it to produce energy. The taking of its extracts it reduces the basal blood glucose rate, post prandial blood glucose and glucosuria, as well as glycosylated proteins. Gymnema can also lead to a reduction in body weight and blood lipid values.
