Magnesium Citrate tablets
Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in our body, fundamental for the proper functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system, muscles and the enzymatic system responsible for energy production (phosphorylation reactions in which ATP is involved). In nature it is present in hazelnuts, legumes, whole grains, green vegetables and bananas.
The greatest amount of Magnesium is found in the cells, where it activates the enzymes necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. By counteracting the stimulating effect of calcium, Magnesium plays an important role for neuromuscular contractions. It also helps regulate our body’s acid-alkaline balance.
Magnesium supports the constitution of the organism, and is fundamental for the resistance of bones and teeth. Magnesium is well absorbed in the intestine and is eliminated mainly in the urine, but also in the stool and sweat. The latter route can become relevant during intense and prolonged sport activities or after saunas.
The most interesting characteristic of Magnesium is that it regulates the fluidity of cells’ wall and their permeability to minerals, especially calcium, sodium, potassium with important consequences for nerve conduction and muscle contraction.
Magnesium deficiency can occur for several reasons:
- Excessive physical or mental stress causes an increased consumption of Magnesium.
- Alcohol causes a greater elimination of Magnesium in urine and reduces its absorption, favoring the alteration of the intestinal bacterial flora.
- A diet rich in sweets can reduce the absorption of the mineral.
- A diet rich in proteins but low in green vegetables, legumes, dried fruit and whole grains is low in magnesium.
- High intake of isolated minerals, such as Calcium, can cause Magnesium deficiency.
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency
Given its biological importance, it is understandable that a deficiency can cause a wide range of symptoms.
Magnesium deficiency causes a tetany caused by an altered neuromuscular transmission. Magnesium ions are antagonists to those of calcium, favoring the depression of the central and peripheral nervous system: a lowering of the Magnesium values (with calcium in the norm) would increase the production of acetylcholine decreasing the rate of its hydrolysis with an increase in neuromuscular irritability and nervous disorders (irritability, difficulty in correlating information, changes in the wake/sleep rhythm).
Other frequent symptoms in case of deficiency can be cardiac (palpitations, extrasystoles, precordialgia), vascular (hot flashes); neurological (headache mainly nuchal, dizziness) and gastrointestinal (gastric cramps, spastic colitis, impaired motility of the biliary tract).
Our Magnesium Citrate
Fitosofia’s Magnesium citrate is available in two-part tablets. Magnesium citrate tastes good and is easily absorbed by the body. Since citric acid is a laxative, magnesium citrate is useful in cases of constipation and intestinal purification because it gently stimulates the slow intestine. It is an excellent choice for individuals with rectal or colon diseases, but it is not suitable for people with diarrhea. Magnesium citrate has also been studied to prevent kidney stone formation.
Magnesium citrate is recommended for people subjected to prolonged periods of stress, nervousness and anxiety; for sportsmen and the elderly. It can be taken to combat fatigue, to assist night rest by promoting relaxation, to combat muscle cramps, premenstrual syndrome and during menopause, to combat osteoporosis and in case of excessive sweating.
Magnesium is also suitable for those who suffer from palpitations, tremors, irritability, especially in case of alcohol abuse. It is also suitable for preventing uterine contractions in pregnancy, but also as a preventive treatment against kidney stones and atherosclerosis. It can also be used to combat stress related hair loss and to prevent caries.
