Description of all red yeast rice synergistic ingredients
Red yeast rice has been a food in China since ancient times. In 1979 it was discovered that a yeast strain (Monascus purpureus) present inside red rice produced a natural substance, Monacolin K, capable of inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol. It acts on a stage of cholesterol biosynthesis, inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in the transformation of HMG-CoA into mevalonic acid, promoting the maintenance of physiological cholesterol values.
Monacolin K is structurally identical to Lovastatin, the first statin introduced on the market. The red color of red yeast rice is due to the production of different pigments by Monascus. This produces bacteriostatic substances, sterols and mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Its lipid-lowering action has been documented by several studies both in humans and on animals. A study conducted in China on 324 dyslipidemic subjects, after 8 weeks of intake of red yeast rice, showed a reduction in total cholesterol equal to 23%, 31% of LDL and 34% triglycerides, while HDL cholesterol levels increased by 20%.
Betasitosterol belongs to the plant sterol family, natural compounds extracted from plants. Their biological activity is similar to that which cholesterol plays in animal cells.
Betasitosterol has a certain structural affinity with cholesterol, its cholesterol lowering action is carried out by limiting the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine, competing with it to be incorporated into the micelles. Cholesterol not incorporated in the micelles forms crystals and is eliminated through the stool. Therefore the efficacy of betasitosterol on the reduction of LDL cholesterol is maximum especially in case of excessive intake with the diet.
Polycosanols are natural substances present in various natural waxes and in particular in sugar cane. Chemically they are a mixture of long-chain primary aliphatic alcohol whose most important component seems to be octacosanol. Policosanols are important antioxidants that decrease the expression of HMG-CoA-reductase with a concentration-dependent mechanism, probably with receptor mechanisms that inhibit the transcription of the gene that codes for this enzyme. Consequently, policosanols do not block cholestogenesis by inactivating HMG-CoA-reductase, but they act by decreasing the number of HMG-CoA-reductase molecules available for the synthesis of cholesterol.
Functions of Policosanols
Polycosanols favor the access of LDL cholesterol into the cells and its subsequent demolition with the production of energy. They are useful for the health of the cardiovascular system: they reduce the oxidation of lipoproteins, and perform an important platelet antiagregant action. They can prevent the formation of thrombi responsible for myocardial infarction, cerebral ischemia and peripheral arterial insufficiency. Polycosanols have been the subject of numerous clinical studies which have shown that an oral daily dose of between 5 and 20 mg decreases plasma levels of LDL cholesterol with an efficacy comparable to that of 20-25 mg of statins and significantly increase HDL cholesterol levels; while the reduction of triglycerides was modest (as indeed happens with many statins). Surely the Policosanoli represent a very valid synergy to the action of fermented Red Rice.
Acerola fruits are one of the most generous sources of vitamin C. They also contain good quantities of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, provitamin A and various mineral salts including iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium. Thanks to its richness in vitamin C, Acerola can contribute to the maintenance of physiological levels of total cholesterol and blood pressure, promoting the increase of HLD cholesterol levels and the inhibition of platelet aggregation. One of the major studies on vitamin C has highlighted the correlation between its blood levels and the values of triglycerides and HDL cholesterol: for every 0.5mg / dl increase in the content of vitamin C in the blood, HDL cholesterol increase is 14.9mg / dl in women and 2.1mg / dl in men; for every 1% increase in HDL cholesterol, the risk of heart disease drops by 4%.
Marc is made of grape skin including the grape seeds. It’s rich in anthocyanidins, a class of polyphenolic antioxidants to which resveratrol also belongs. These molecules are produced by the plant in response to stress, injury, fungal infections and UV radiation. Several pharmacological studies have shown that anthocyanosides have antioxidant, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenetic properties. Thanks to their antioxidant properties they exert an inhibiting action on the reactions that lead to the peroxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL). In this way, they limit the cytotoxic effects that are the basis of multiple degenerative processes, and reduce the ability of LDL to adhere to the endothelium of veins and arteries. By virtue of this, Marc certainly plays an important synergistic action with red yeast rice.
Vitamin E is the body’s main lipid antioxidant. It can be found inside cell membranes and transport molecules and plays a stabilizing and protecting function of these structures against toxic substances. Vitamin E prevents the oxidation of cholesterol and of transport proteins, which are generally very sensitive to damages from free radicals; it also protects the arteries from oxidative damages and promotes the increase of HDL cholesterol.
This vitamin complex helps control plasma levels of homocysteine, an intermediate metabolite of the conversion of methionine to cysteine. If this sulfur amino acid is in excess, it can directly damage arteries and compromise the integrity of blood vessels, therefore it can represent a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke and thrombosis. Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is necessary for the methylation of homocysteine and its transformation into methionine; it is also essential to correct endothelial dysfunction and reduce the formation of radicals and atheromatous plaques. Several studies have confirmed that combining vitamins B6 and B12 with folic acid, gives benefits to the metabolization of homocysteine and its transformation into non-harmful compounds. In addition, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is able to inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce blood pressure.
Selenium is a trace element that acts mainly as a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which works with vitamin E in preventing damages caused by free radicals to cell membranes. Selenium is an antagonist of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, aluminum and cadmium and is involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. It provides protection against heart disease and myocardial infarction thanks to its ability to increase the ratio between HDL and LDL cholesterol and inhibit platelet aggregation.
Indications and Use
Indications: hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemias, hyperlipidaemias, maintenance of cardiovascular well-being.
Warnings: Red yeast rice is safe and free of contraindications even for prolonged use over time. It is not recommended for use in pregnancy, lactation and in subjects with severe hepatic and renal insufficiency. Since cholesterol synthesis inhibitors, like all statins and biostatins, reduce the synthesis of coenzyme Q10, it is good to associate the integration of this substance.
Assumption: We recommend taking 1-2 capsules a day, preferably before lunch and dinner, swallowed with water or drinks. The beneficial effect is obtained with the daily intake of 10mg of Monakolina K from red yeast rice.
